📖 Lesson

The test in one minute এক নজরে পরীক্ষা

IELTS Listening is the same test for Academic and General Training candidates. You hear four recordings and answer 40 questions. The recordings last about 30 minutes in total, and each one is played only once — there is no second chance to hear a sentence you missed.

On the computer-delivered test you type answers straight into boxes on screen and get two minutes at the end to check them. On the paper test you write on the question paper while listening and then have ten minutes to copy your answers onto the answer sheet. Either way, every question is worth one mark, and a wrong answer costs nothing more than a blank one — so never leave a question empty.

The speakers use a range of accents: British, Australian, New Zealand, North American and others. You do not need to copy any accent, but you do need to be used to hearing them. That is why practising with a variety of recordings matters more than practising a lot with one.

Listening দুই module-এই এক। ৪টি recording, ৪০টি প্রশ্ন, প্রায় ৩০ মিনিট। প্রতিটি recording মাত্র একবার বাজে। ভুল উত্তরে নম্বর কাটে না — তাই কোনো প্রশ্ন ফাঁকা রাখবেন না।

The four parts

PartWho is speakingTypical situationDifficulty
Part 1Two people in conversationEveryday life: booking a course, renting a flat, joining a gymEasiest — facts, names, numbers
Part 2One person speakingEveryday life: a tour guide, a talk about local facilitiesEasy to medium
Part 3Two to four peopleEducation or training: students and a tutor discussing a projectMedium to hard — opinions and agreement
Part 4One person speakingAn academic lecture on a topic such as science or historyHardest — long, no break in the middle

What each part is really testing প্রতিটি অংশ আসলে কী পরীক্ষা করে

Part 1 tests whether you can catch exact details: a surname spelled letter by letter, a phone number, a date, a price. The language is simple, but one wrong letter makes the answer wrong. Many Band 7 candidates lose easy marks here through careless spelling.

Part 2 is a monologue — one voice giving information. Questions often follow a map, a list of facilities or a schedule. The challenge is keeping your place: if you miss one answer, you must move on quickly so you do not miss the next two.

Part 3 is a discussion. Two students might disagree about a research method, and their tutor might suggest a third option. The questions test whether you understood who thinks what, and whether an idea was accepted or rejected. Listen for words like 'actually', 'I'm not sure about that', and 'that's a good point'.

Part 4 is a lecture with about ten questions, usually note or summary completion. It is the most academic part, but the answers come in order, and the notes on your page are a map of the lecture. Following the headings in the notes is the key skill.

Part 1-এ বানান ও সংখ্যা, Part 2-এ জায়গা ধরে রাখা, Part 3-এ কে কী মত দিল, আর Part 4-এ notes-এর heading অনুসরণ করা — এগুলোই মূল দক্ষতা।

From correct answers to a band score

Correct answers (out of 40)Band
35–368.0
32–347.5
30–317.0
26–296.5
23–256.0
18–225.5

What Band 7 actually needs Band 7-এর জন্য আসলে কী লাগে

Band 7 needs 30 correct answers out of 40. That means you can lose ten marks and still reach it. Most candidates who score 6.0 are not failing Part 4 completely — they are losing three or four easy marks in Parts 1 and 2 through spelling, plurals and numbers, and another few in Part 3 by choosing an option that was mentioned but then rejected.

So the fastest route to a higher band is usually not understanding harder lectures. It is protecting the easy marks: spelling names correctly, writing numbers in the right form, and checking that your answer fits the grammar of the gap.

Band 7-এর জন্য ৪০-এ ৩০টি সঠিক লাগবে। বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী Part 1 ও 2-এর সহজ নম্বর বানান ও সংখ্যার ভুলে হারায় — আগে সেগুলো রক্ষা করুন।

How to use the reading time before each part প্রতিটি অংশের আগে পড়ার সময় কীভাবে কাজে লাগাবেন

Before each part starts, you get a short pause to look at the questions. Strong candidates never waste it. In those seconds you should do three things:

  • Read the instruction — especially the word limit. 'ONE WORD ONLY' means 'Tuesday 14' is too long; 'ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER' would allow it.
  • Underline the key word in each question, the word that tells you when the answer is coming (for example 'price', 'start date', 'nearest station').
  • Predict the type of answer — is it a number, a name, a day, a noun? A gap after 'costs £' must be a number; a gap after 'bring a' must be a singular noun.

প্রতিটি অংশের আগে প্রশ্ন দেখার সময় পাবেন। এই সময়ে নির্দেশনা (word limit) পড়ুন, key word চিহ্নিত করুন, আর কী ধরনের উত্তর আসবে তা অনুমান করুন।

Training your ear between lessons পাঠের বাইরে প্রতিদিন কান তৈরি করা

Listening improves with daily exposure, not with one long session a week. Twenty minutes every day of English you can mostly follow is worth more than two hours of something too difficult once on Friday. Choose material slightly above your level: you should understand the main idea, but still meet new words and accents.

Use active listening, not background listening. Play a short clip — two or three minutes of a podcast, a news report or a university lecture — and set yourself a task before you start, exactly like the exam: write down every number you hear, note the speaker's main point, or list the names of places. Then listen again with a transcript and check what you missed. The gap between what you heard and what was said is your personal list of things to work on.

  • Monday–Wednesday: everyday conversations (Part 1 and 2 style) — interviews, phone calls, travel vlogs.
  • Thursday–Friday: discussions and talks (Part 3 and 4 style) — panel podcasts, short lectures.
  • Weekend: one full practice test on this site, then review every wrong answer.

প্রতিদিন ২০ মিনিট মনোযোগ দিয়ে শোনা সপ্তাহে একবার দুই ঘণ্টার চেয়ে বেশি কাজে দেয়। শোনার আগে একটি কাজ ঠিক করুন (সংখ্যা লেখা, মূল কথা ধরা), পরে transcript দেখে মিলিয়ে নিন।

The answers come in the same order as the questions. If the speaker has clearly moved past question 4, stop waiting for it — guess, and listen for question 5.

উত্তরগুলো প্রশ্নের ক্রমেই আসে। একটি প্রশ্ন মিস হলে আটকে থাকবেন না — অনুমান করে পরেরটিতে মন দিন।

✍️ Worked example: Preparing a Part 1 form in 30 seconds

Complete the form. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
Member's surname: ______
Phone: ______
Preferred class day: ______
Monthly fee: £ ______
  1. Instruction: one word and/or a number — so no answer can be two words.
  2. Surname: expect it to be spelled out letter by letter. Get ready to write capital letters as you hear them.
  3. Phone: a number. Listen for 'double' (double five = 55) and 'oh' (= 0).
  4. Class day: a day of the week. If you hear two days, the second one is often a correction ('Monday — oh no, Wednesdays are better').
  5. Fee after £: a number only. Do not write the £ sign again, and watch for a discount mentioned later that changes the price.

🎯 Listening practice: joining a sports centre

Read the questions first (30 seconds). Then play the recording ONCE and answer. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for questions 1–4.

আগে প্রশ্নগুলো পড়ুন, তারপর recording একবার শুনে উত্তর দিন। Transcript শুধু উত্তর দেওয়ার পরে দেখুন।

Show the transcript (after you answer)

Narrator: You will hear a man phoning a sports centre to ask about membership. First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.

Woman: Good morning, Harbourside Sports Centre, Priya speaking. How can I help?

Man: Hi. I'd like to join the centre, mainly for the swimming pool. Could you tell me how it works?

Woman: Of course. I'll just take a few details first. What's your surname, please?

Man: It's Okafor. O, K, A, F, O, R.

Woman: Thank you, Mr Okafor. And the best number to reach you on?

Man: It's oh seven nine double four, six one two, three oh eight.

Woman: Lovely. Now, we run a beginners' swimming class twice a week. Would Monday evenings suit you?

Man: Monday would be difficult, actually. I work late that day. Is there another option?

Woman: Yes, there's the same class on Thursday evenings at seven.

Man: Thursday's perfect.

Woman: Great. Standard membership is forty-two pounds a month. But as you mentioned you only want the pool, the swim-only membership would be cheaper, at twenty-eight pounds.

Man: Swim-only sounds right. Do I need to bring anything on my first visit?

Woman: Just some photo ID, so we can make your membership card. Towels you can hire here, so don't worry about those.

Man: And is there parking?

Woman: There's a small car park, but it fills up quickly. Most members come by bus — the number twelve stops right outside.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Writing the first option you hear when the speaker then changes their mind (Monday → Thursday).
  • Breaking the word limit — 'on Thursday evening' is three words when only one is allowed.
  • Misspelling a name that was spelled out letter by letter.
  • Leaving a gap empty. A blank and a wrong answer both score zero, so always guess.

Lesson 2: Each Section In Detail

Deep Dive · 20 min · Section 1–4 explained
▼
📻 Section 1 — Social Conversation
দুজন মানুষের মধ্যে everyday কথোপকথন — booking, enquiry, registration ইত্যাদি। এটি সবচেয়ে সহজ section।
Common Section 1 Scenarios
📞 Hotel booking কথোপকথন
🏥 Doctor's appointment registration
🏫 University accommodation enquiry
🚗 Car rental booking
🎭 Event/theatre ticket booking
📦 Lost luggage report
💡 Section 1 Tips
  • প্রায় সবসময় form completion আসে
  • Names, numbers, addresses, dates — এগুলো spell করে শুনতে হবে
  • Speaker প্রায়ই বলবে: "That's M-A-R-T-I-N" — সাথে সাথে লিখুন
  • এই section-এ সর্বোচ্চ marks পাওয়ার সুযোগ
📻 Section 2 — Community Monologue
একজন মানুষ কোনো community বা local context-এ কথা বলছেন। যেমন: museum guide, radio program, community centre announcement।
Common Section 2 Scenarios
🏛️ Museum বা tourist attraction guide
📻 Community radio program
🏊 Sports centre facilities tour
🌳 Nature park audio guide
🏘️ Local council announcement
📻 Section 3 — Academic Discussion
২–৪ জন student বা tutor মিলে academic topic নিয়ে আলোচনা। এখানে opinions change হয় এবং distractor থাকে।
⚠️ Distractor সাবধান! Section 3-এ speakers প্রায়ই মত পরিবর্তন করে। যেমন: "I thought we should do X... but actually Y would be better." — এখানে সঠিক উত্তর Y, কিন্তু অনেক student X লিখে ভুল করে।
📻 Section 4 — Academic Lecture
একজন professor বা expert একটি academic topic-এ lecture দিচ্ছেন। এটি সবচেয়ে কঠিন — কোনো break নেই, speed বেশি, vocabulary কঠিন।
🎯 Section 4 Survival Tips
  • শুরুতে lecturer সাধারণত overview দেন — মনোযোগ দিন
  • Signpost words শুনুন: "First... Then... Moving on... Finally..."
  • যদি একটি answer miss হয় — panic করবেন না, পরের question-এ focus করুন
  • Guess করুন — blank রাখবেন না

Urban Farming

Urban farming — growing food within city limits — is rapidly expanding worldwide. Cities like Singapore, Detroit, and Tokyo now host rooftop gardens, vertical farms, and community allotments. Supporters argue that urban farms reduce food miles, lower carbon emissions, and improve community bonds. Critics, however, note that urban farming can realistically supply only a small fraction of a city's food needs due to land and water constraints. Despite this, its social and environmental value continues to drive investment and policy support globally.

Prediction and keywords

উত্তর অনুমান ও key word চেনা

By the end of today you can

  • Predict the grammar and meaning of every gap before the recording starts
  • Choose the right keywords to underline in a question and ignore the rest
  • Recognise when the recording paraphrases the question with different words
  • Use names, numbers and dates as fixed signposts that cannot be paraphrased

📖 Lesson

Why prediction is the most important Listening habit কেন prediction সবচেয়ে জরুরি অভ্যাস

In the exam you hear each recording only once, and the speakers do not slow down for you. If you start listening with no idea what you are waiting for, the answer often goes past before you notice it. If you already know that gap 3 needs a price and gap 4 needs a place in a building, your brain is ready to catch exactly those things.

Prediction has two layers. The first is grammar: what kind of word can fit the gap — a noun, a number, an adjective, a verb ending in -ing? The second is meaning: what is the word probably about — a day, a colour, a type of food, a job? You will not always guess the exact word, and you do not need to. You only need to narrow the possibilities so the right answer stands out when you hear it.

Strong candidates do this for every question in the reading time before each part. It takes about three seconds per gap once you are used to it, and it is the single habit that most clearly separates Band 6 listeners from Band 7 listeners.

Recording একবারই বাজে, তাই শোনার আগেই জানতে হবে কী খুঁজছেন। প্রতিটি gap-এর জন্য দুটি জিনিস অনুমান করুন — grammar (noun, number, adjective) আর meaning (দিন, জায়গা, দাম)।

Reading the clues around a gap

Gap in the questionCluePrediction
Course fee: £ ______£ sign before the gapA number only, probably two or three digits
Please bring a ______'a' before the gapA singular noun starting with a consonant sound
Classes are held in the ______'the' + 'held in'A noun for a place or room: hall, library, studio

Visitors should avoid ______ near the lake'avoid' before the gapA verb ending in -ing: swimming, cycling, feeding
Starts on ______ 14 Marchdate after the gapA day of the week

A 30-second routine for any set of questions যেকোনো প্রশ্নের জন্য ৩০ সেকেন্ডের routine

Use the same routine every time, so it becomes automatic under pressure. Practise it today on the task below, and on every practice test this week.

  • Step 1 — Read the instruction. Circle the word limit. NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER means 'half past ten' (three words) is too long, but '10.30' is fine.
  • Step 2 — Find the keywords. In each question, underline one or two words that carry the meaning: usually nouns and verbs such as 'fee', 'begin', 'deposit', 'borrow'. Ignore small words like 'the', 'will', 'of'.
  • Step 3 — Predict grammar. Look at the words directly before and after the gap. Write a tiny note in the margin: N (noun), No. (number), Adj, V-ing.
  • Step 4 — Predict meaning. Ask: what would make sense here in real life? A photography course might ask you to bring a camera, a notebook or a tripod — not a towel.
  • Step 5 — Think of synonyms. For each keyword, quickly think of one or two other ways a speaker could say it. 'Begin' might be 'start', 'kick off' or 'the first session is at'.

প্রতিবার একই পাঁচটি ধাপ: নির্দেশনা ও word limit পড়ুন, key word চিহ্নিত করুন, grammar অনুমান করুন, meaning অনুমান করুন, আর key word-এর সমার্থক শব্দ ভাবুন।

Paraphrase: the speaker rarely uses your words Paraphrase: বক্তা প্রায় কখনো প্রশ্নের শব্দ ব্যবহার করেন না

The people who write IELTS questions deliberately use different words from the recording. If the question says 'The centre will lend students a camera', the speaker might say 'you can borrow one of ours' or 'we'll give everyone a camera to use for the term'. If you wait only for the word 'lend', you will miss the answer.

Paraphrase happens in three main ways. Synonyms replace one word with another ('cheaper' → 'reduced rate'). Different grammar turns the same idea around ('students pay £70' → 'the fee for students is £70'). Explanation replaces a word with a description ('refreshments' → 'tea, coffee and some biscuits'). Part 1 uses mostly simple synonyms; Parts 3 and 4 use much more explanation.

This is why Step 5 of the routine matters. You do not have to guess the exact paraphrase. You only need to be listening for an idea, not a word. When you hear something that means the same as your keyword, you know the answer is close — usually in the same or the next sentence.

প্রশ্নে যে শব্দ থাকে, recording-এ সাধারণত তার সমার্থক শব্দ বা ব্যাখ্যা শোনা যায়। নির্দিষ্ট শব্দ নয়, ধারণা (idea) শোনার চেষ্টা করুন।

Paraphrases you will hear again and again

Question saysSpeaker might say

Fixed signposts: what cannot be paraphrased যেগুলো paraphrase হয় না: নাম, সংখ্যা, তারিখ

Some words cannot be changed: names of people and places, numbers, dates and times. If a question mentions 'Room 14' or 'the Kamal Building', you will hear those exact words. Use them as signposts. When you hear one, you know exactly where you are in the questions, even if you lost your place earlier.

But be careful: a recording often mentions more than one number, day or price, and only one is the answer. The speaker may give a full price and then a student price, or an old time and then a new time. Your meaning prediction helps here. If the question says 'Student price', you are waiting for the second price, not the first. If it says 'now begin', the word 'now' tells you the time has changed, so you should expect to hear an old time first.

Finally, keep your prediction flexible. If you predicted a day but the speaker clearly gives a date that fits the grammar and the meaning, write the date. Prediction is a tool for focusing your attention, not a rule you must obey.

নাম, সংখ্যা ও তারিখ বদলায় না — এগুলো দিয়ে কোন প্রশ্নে আছেন তা বুঝুন। তবে একাধিক সংখ্যা বা দাম শোনা গেলে প্রশ্নের key word (যেমন 'student', 'now') দেখে সঠিকটি বেছে নিন।

Words like now, instead, actually and in the end in a question or a recording usually mean something has changed. Expect to hear a wrong answer first and the right one second.

'now', 'instead', 'actually', 'in the end' শুনলে বুঝবেন তথ্য বদলেছে — প্রথম উত্তরটি সাধারণত ভুল, পরেরটি সঠিক।

✍️ Worked example: Predicting four gaps before you listen

Complete the notes. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
Walking tour of the old town
1. Tour now leaves from the ______
2. Price for children: £ ______
3. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable ______
4. The tour is not suitable for people using ______
  1. Instruction: two words and/or a number. So 'the main square' is fine (two words after 'the'), but 'the old main square' is too long.
  2. Gap 1: after 'from the' — a place noun such as 'station', 'museum' or 'square'. The word now tells you the meeting point has changed, so expect an old place first and the real one second.
  3. Gap 2: after '£' — a number only. Keyword children: listen for 'kids', 'under-12s' or 'young people'. The adult price will probably come first; do not write it.
  4. Gap 3: after 'comfortable' and with no 'a' — a plural noun. On a walking tour the obvious meaning is 'shoes'. Remember the -s: 'shoe' would be marked wrong.
  5. Gap 4: after 'using' — a noun for equipment. The meaning is about access, so predict 'wheelchairs', or perhaps 'pushchairs'. Listen for a paraphrase of 'not suitable', such as 'there are lots of steps, so I'm afraid…'

🎯 Listening practice: a weekend photography course

First spend 30 seconds on the questions: underline keywords, predict the answer type, and think of synonyms. Then play the recording ONCE. For the gap questions, write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER. Notice that the questions use different words from the speakers.

আগে ৩০ সেকেন্ড প্রশ্ন পড়ে key word চিহ্নিত করুন ও উত্তরের ধরন অনুমান করুন। তারপর recording একবার শুনুন। লক্ষ করুন, প্রশ্নের শব্দ আর recording-এর শব্দ আলাদা।

Narrator: You will hear a woman phoning an arts centre to ask about a photography course. First, you have some time to look at questions one to seven.

Man: Good afternoon, Eastbrook Arts Centre, Daniel speaking. How can I help?

Woman: Hello. I saw a poster for a beginners' photography course, and I wanted to find out a bit more before I sign up.

Man: Sure, that's our weekend course. It runs for six Saturdays, starting on the ninth of March.

Woman: And what time does it begin in the morning?

Man: Sessions used to start at nine, but a lot of people struggled to get here that early, so now we get going at half past ten and finish at one.

Woman: That's much better for me. Do I need my own camera? I've only got the one on my phone.

Man: A phone is absolutely fine for the first three weeks. After that, the tutor hands out proper digital cameras for you to use until the end of the course, so there's no need to buy one.

Woman: Oh, that's generous. And what's the total cost?

Man: The full price is ninety-five pounds. But if you're a student or over sixty, there's a reduced rate of seventy pounds.

Woman: I'm studying at the college, so I'd pay the lower one.

Woman: What does the tutor concentrate on? I'm mostly interested in pictures of people.

Man: Well, portraits do come up, but only in one session. The main emphasis is on natural light — how to get great results from daylight without using a flash.

Woman: That sounds useful anyway. Are the classes in the main building?

Man: Not this term. The main hall is being repainted, so we've moved the course to the old library — that's the building right beside ours.

Woman: And is there anything at the end, like an exhibition?

Man: Yes. On the last Saturday everyone picks their three best photographs, and we hang them in the café for a month.

Woman: Lovely. How do I book?

Man: You can book online, but places go quickly, so I'd suggest paying a twenty-pound deposit over the phone today. The rest is due on the first morning.

  1. 1. Because the old time was unpopular, sessions now begin at ______.

  2. 2. From the fourth week, the centre will…

  3. 3. Price for students: £ ______

  4. 4. The course mainly teaches how to work with ______ rather than a flash.

  5. 5. This term, the classes will be held in…

  6. 6. At the end of the course, students' best work will be displayed in the ______.

  7. 7. To keep a place, she should pay £ ______ today.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Waiting to hear the exact word from the question ('lend') and missing the paraphrase ('hands out … for you to use').
  • Writing the first number heard (the full price, the old time) instead of the one the keyword points to.
  • Ignoring the grammar around the gap — writing 'shoe' when 'comfortable ______' with no 'a' needs a plural noun.
  • Underlining every word in the question, so nothing stands out as a keyword.
  • Treating a prediction as a fixed rule and rejecting a correct answer because it was not the word you expected.

Multiple choice and matching

Multiple choice ও matching প্রশ্ন

By the end of today you can

  • Read multiple-choice options in advance and spot how they differ
  • Recognise options that are mentioned and then rejected or corrected
  • Follow agreement and disagreement between speakers in a Part 3 discussion
  • Match a list of items to a set of options while keeping your place

📖 Lesson

Why multiple choice feels harder than it looks Multiple choice কেন কঠিন মনে হয়

In a gap-fill question you write one word you hear. In a multiple-choice question you read three or four options, and almost all of them will be mentioned in some way. The question writers build every wrong option from something the speakers really say. That is why so many candidates choose an answer, feel certain, and still lose the mark.

The wrong options are called distractors. They usually work in one of four ways: the idea is mentioned and then rejected ('We thought about a survey, but…'); it is true for someone else (the tutor likes it, but the question asks about the student); it is true at a different time ('we used to…'); or it uses the exact words from the recording but with a different meaning. The correct option, by contrast, is usually paraphrased, so it often sounds less obvious than the distractors.

Multiple choice appears in all four parts, but it is most common in Part 2 and Part 3. Matching — where you link a list of people, places or features to a box of options — is mainly a Part 3 task, with some Part 2 versions.

Multiple choice-এ প্রায় সব option-ই recording-এ কোনো না কোনোভাবে শোনা যায়। ভুল option (distractor) সাধারণত বাতিল করা ধারণা, অন্য কারও মত, অন্য সময়ের তথ্য, বা হুবহু শব্দ দিয়ে তৈরি। সঠিক উত্তর সাধারণত paraphrase করা থাকে।

The four distractor traps

TrapWhat you hearWhy it is wrong
Mentioned, then rejected'We considered interviews, but nobody had time.'Interviews were not chosen
Someone else's view'Our tutor loved the idea, but I'm not convinced.'The question asks what the student thinks
Wrong time'Last year it was held in the hall; this year it's online.'The question asks about now
Same words, different meaning'It wasn't the cost that worried us.''Cost' is said, but it is denied

Preparing multiple choice in the reading time পড়ার সময়ে multiple choice-এর প্রস্তুতি

You will not have time to read every option slowly while the speakers talk, so the preparation has to happen before the recording starts.

  • Read the question stem first and underline its focus: 'why', 'what problem', 'what does the tutor suggest', 'what do they agree'. A question about the tutor's opinion means the students' opinions are traps.
  • Read the options and find the differences. If all three options are about a survey, underline the part that differs: 'too few replies', 'confusing questions', 'took too long'. That difference is what you are listening for.
  • Shorten each option in your head to one or two words: A = permission, B = noticed waste, C = tutor's idea. This makes them faster to compare while listening.
  • Do not choose an option the moment you hear its words. Wait until the speakers finish that point. The answer often comes after a 'but', an 'actually' or a reply from the second speaker.
  • Put a light mark, then decide. Tick an option when it is mentioned, cross it when it is rejected, and commit when the conversation moves on.

Recording শুরুর আগে প্রশ্নের মূল বিষয় চিহ্নিত করুন, option-গুলোর পার্থক্য খুঁজুন, প্রতিটিকে এক-দুই শব্দে ছোট করুন। Option-এর শব্দ শুনেই উত্তর বেছে নেবেন না — বক্তারা কথা শেষ করা পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করুন।

Listening for agreement and disagreement সম্মতি ও অসম্মতি শোনা

In Part 3, an idea is only the answer if the speakers accept it. So the most important words are often small reactions. Learn to hear these signals quickly, because they tell you whether the option you just ticked survives.

Agreement sounds like: 'That's a good point', 'Exactly', 'I'd go along with that', 'Fair enough', 'Let's do that then'. Disagreement or doubt sounds like: 'I'm not so sure', 'The trouble with that is…', 'Maybe, but…', 'I see what you mean, however…', 'I'd rather not'. A change of mind sounds like: 'Actually, thinking about it…', 'On second thoughts…', 'So we've dropped that idea'.

Watch out for polite disagreement. English speakers, especially tutors, often reject an idea softly: 'That's interesting, but think about the time it would take' means no, or not now. If you only hear 'interesting', you will tick the wrong box.

Part 3-এ একটি ধারণা তখনই উত্তর যখন বক্তারা তা মেনে নেন। 'That's a good point' মানে সম্মতি; 'I'm not so sure', 'Maybe, but' মানে আপত্তি। Tutor-রা প্রায়ই ভদ্রভাবে না বলেন — 'interesting, but…' শুনে ভুল বুঝবেন না।

Matching: a list of items and a box of options Matching: তালিকার সাথে option মেলানো

A matching task gives you a numbered list (for example four data sources, five people, or six facilities) and a box of lettered options (A, B, C…). You choose one letter for each item. There are usually more options than you need, or some letters are used more than once — check the instruction.

The items in the numbered list are spoken in order, so they work as signposts. The options in the box are not in order, and they are almost always paraphrased. 'We've dropped that idea' matches 'rejected'; 'if we finish early, we'll add it' matches 'will use only if there is time'.

Before you listen, read the box of options until you can remember them — there are rarely more than five or six. Then, while listening, keep your eyes on the numbered list and wait for each item to be named. When the speakers move from one item to the next, make your decision, even if you are not completely sure, and move on. Getting stuck on item 2 is how you lose items 3 and 4 as well.

Matching-এ তালিকার item-গুলো ক্রমানুসারে আসে — এগুলো signpost। Option box-এর কথাগুলো paraphrase হয়ে আসে। শোনার আগে option-গুলো মুখস্থের মতো পড়ে নিন, তারপর তালিকার দিকে চোখ রাখুন।

A home drill for distractors Distractor চেনার জন্য বাড়িতে অনুশীলন

You can train this skill without a full practice test. Take any Part 3 recording you have already done, open the transcript, and find each multiple-choice question. For every option — right and wrong — underline the sentence where it is mentioned. Then write one short label next to each wrong option: rejected, someone else, wrong time or denied. After three or four recordings you will start to hear these patterns automatically, because you will have seen how the question writers build them.

A second drill works on agreement. Play a two-person discussion from a podcast or a TV panel and pause after every reaction ('Mm, maybe', 'Absolutely', 'I'm not sure that works'). Say aloud whether the speaker is accepting or rejecting the last idea. This sounds simple, but it trains the exact decision you must make in Part 3 in less than a second.

Finally, when you check a practice test, do not only look at the questions you got wrong. Look at the ones you got right by luck. If you cannot explain why each wrong option is wrong, you have not yet learned the skill — you were simply fortunate on that day.

Transcript খুলে প্রতিটি ভুল option-এর পাশে লিখুন কেন সেটি ভুল: rejected, someone else, wrong time বা denied। আলোচনা শুনে প্রতিটি প্রতিক্রিয়ায় থেমে বলুন — বক্তা মেনে নিলেন, না বাতিল করলেন।

If two options both seem right, ask: does the question focus match? 'What do the students decide' is not answered by what the tutor recommends, unless the students then agree.

দুটি option-ই ঠিক মনে হলে দেখুন প্রশ্ন কার মত জানতে চাইছে — student-দের সিদ্ধান্ত, নাকি tutor-এর পরামর্শ।

✍️ Worked example: Choosing between three options that are all mentioned

Why did the students change the topic of their presentation?
A Their tutor recommended a different topic.
B They could not find enough recent sources.
C The original topic had already been chosen by another group.
Recording: Student 1: 'Dr Lee did say the transport topic might be easier, didn't she?' Student 2: 'She did, but that's not why we switched. And there's actually loads of research on housing — that was never the problem. It was when we saw that Karim's group had already signed up for housing. We couldn't really argue with that.'
  1. Read the stem: the focus is 'why' the students changed. Shorten the options: A = tutor, B = sources, C = other group.
  2. Option A is mentioned first: the tutor did suggest transport. But Student 2 says 'that's not why we switched'. Cross A — it is true, but it is not the reason.
  3. Option B is denied: 'there's actually loads of research… that was never the problem'. The word 'research' paraphrases 'sources', but the meaning is the opposite. Cross B.
  4. Option C is paraphrased: 'Karim's group had already signed up for housing' = 'already chosen by another group'. Notice that the recording never uses the word 'chosen'.
  5. Answer: C. The correct option came last and was the only one expressed in different words — a very typical pattern.

🎯 Listening practice: a food waste research project

You will hear two students, Nadia and Tom, talking to their tutor. Before listening, read all the questions and shorten each option. For questions 3–6, choose what the students decide about each data source: A = will definitely use it, B = will use it only if there is time, C = have rejected it. Play the recording ONCE.

আগে সব প্রশ্ন ও option পড়ে নিন। প্রশ্ন ৩–৬-এ প্রতিটি data source-এর জন্য student-রা কী সিদ্ধান্ত নিল তা বেছে নিন: A = অবশ্যই ব্যবহার করবে, B = সময় থাকলে, C = বাদ দিয়েছে। Recording একবার শুনুন।

Show the transcript (after you answer)

Narrator: You will hear two students, Nadia and Tom, discussing their research project with their tutor, Dr Mensah. First, you have some time to look at questions one to seven.

Man: So, how's the food waste project going? Remind me why you chose the university canteen in the end. I'd suggested the supermarket on Hill Street.

Woman: We did think about the supermarket. But really it was the canteen itself that gave us the idea. Every lunchtime we watched trays going back with half the meal still on them.

Man: And people assume it was easy to get permission there, but it wasn't — it took three weeks of emails.

Man: Fair enough. And how did the pilot questionnaire go?

Woman: Disappointing. We got plenty of replies — over a hundred — but lots of people misunderstood question four. We asked about portions, and many students thought we meant the price.

Man: So the response rate was fine. It was the wording that let us down.

Man: That happens to everyone. Now, your data sources. Interviews with the kitchen staff?

Woman: We're definitely keeping those. The head chef has already agreed to talk to us next week.

Man: Then there's weighing the waste bins after each lunch. I was really keen on that, but the manager says handling the bins is a hygiene risk.

Man: I'd agree with her. You'd need training and protective clothing.

Woman: So we've dropped that completely.

Woman: The photographs of plates were my idea. We'd photograph trays before they're cleared.

Man: Interesting, but think about the time. Analysing hundreds of photos is slow work. I'd treat it as an extra.

Man: Right. If the interviews finish early, we'll add the photos. Otherwise we'll leave them out.

Man: And the online questionnaire stays, with the corrected wording, of course. Everything else depends on it.

Man: Good. One last thing. Before you collect anything else, I'd like a one-page plan from you both. Don't worry about the literature review yet — that can wait. And there's no need to book a presentation slot until May.

Woman: A one-page plan. We'll send it to you on Friday.

Maps, plans and diagram labelling

Map, plan ও diagram labelling

By the end of today you can

  • Orient yourself on a map in the reading time: find the start point, the compass and the labelled features
  • Understand direction and position language such as opposite, at the far end, clockwise and north-east corner
  • Follow a speaker's route step by step without losing your place
  • Avoid the trap of a place that has moved or a feature that is described but not labelled

📖 Lesson

What map and plan questions look like Map ও plan প্রশ্ন দেখতে কেমন

Map labelling usually appears in Part 2, where one speaker — a guide, a manager, a volunteer organiser — describes a place: a park, a museum, a campus, a sports centre, a new housing development. You see a plan with some features already named and some blank boxes or letters. Your job is to match each place in the list to the right letter, or write a name in a box.

Diagram labelling is similar but shows a machine, a building or a process, and appears more often in Part 3 or Part 4. The skills are the same: understand where you are starting, follow the speaker as they move, and listen for position language.

Candidates who are good at gap-fill often find maps difficult, not because the English is hard, but because they lose their place. The speaker says 'go past the café and turn left', and while you are still looking for the café, they have already described two more buildings. The solution is preparation: by the time the recording starts, you should know the map almost as well as the speaker does.

Map প্রশ্ন সাধারণত Part 2-এ আসে — একজন guide কোনো জায়গা বর্ণনা করেন। কঠিন ইংরেজির কারণে নয়, বরং map-এ জায়গা হারিয়ে ফেলার কারণে নম্বর কাটে। তাই শোনার আগে map ভালোভাবে চিনে নিন।

Orienting yourself in the reading time পড়ার সময়ে map-এ নিজেকে চিনে নেওয়া

Spend your 30 seconds on the map, not just the question list. Work through these checks in order:

  • Find the starting point. Look for 'You are here', an entrance, a gate or a reception desk. Speakers almost always begin there, so put your pen on it.
  • Find the compass. If there is an N arrow, say quietly to yourself which way is north, south, east and west on this page. Many maps put north at the top, but not all.
  • Read every named feature. The names already printed — the lake, the car park, Main Street — are your signposts. The speaker will use them to guide you to the blank ones: 'opposite the car park', 'between the lake and the road'.
  • Notice the shape. Is there one central path, a ring road, a corridor with rooms on both sides? Knowing the shape helps you follow a route.
  • Read the list of places to find and predict a little: a café is likely near an entrance or a view; toilets near the car park; a staff-only area at the edge.

প্রথমে শুরু করার জায়গা (entrance বা 'You are here') খুঁজুন, তারপর compass দেখুন, map-এ লেখা নামগুলো পড়ুন, পথের আকার বুঝুন, এবং কোন জায়গাগুলো খুঁজতে হবে তা পড়ে নিন।

Position and direction language

ExpressionWhat it means on the map
opposite / facing / across fromOn the other side of a path or road, looking at it
next to / beside / right by / adjacent toTouching or very close, on the same side
between X and YWith X on one side and Y on the other
at the far end (of the path / corridor)At the end furthest from where you started
in the north-east cornerThe top-right corner if north is at the top
just past / beyondA little further along, after you pass something
on your left as you go inDepends on the direction of travel, not the top of the page
clockwise / anticlockwiseMoving round in the same / opposite direction as clock hands
head / carry straight on / bear rightWalk / continue in the same direction / turn slightly right

Left and right: the trap that catches everyone বাম আর ডান: সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ

When a speaker says 'on your left', they mean the left of a person walking in the direction described, not the left side of your page. If you enter a garden through a gate at the bottom of the map and walk up, your left is the left of the page. But if you enter from the top and walk down, your left is the right side of the page.

The simplest fix is physical: turn the question paper (or imagine turning it) so you are facing the same way as the speaker. On a computer-delivered test you cannot rotate the screen, so draw a small arrow on your scrap paper and trace the route with your finger.

Compass directions do not have this problem. 'The north-west corner' is always the same place, whichever way you walk. Speakers in IELTS use both systems, often in the same talk, so you need to be comfortable switching between them.

'on your left' মানে হাঁটার দিকের বাম, পাতার বাম নয়। উপর থেকে নিচে হাঁটলে বাম দিক পাতার ডান দিকে পড়ে। Compass direction (north-west ইত্যাদি) সবসময় একই থাকে।

Following a route while you listen শোনার সময় পথ অনুসরণ করা

Keep your pen or finger moving with the speaker. Every time they name a printed feature ('when you reach the pond'), move your pen there. Every time they give a movement ('turn left and keep going to the corner'), move your pen along the path. When they name a place from your list, the letter under your pen is usually the answer.

Listen carefully for changes. Places move: 'The café used to be by the car park, but it's now beside the lake.' Features are described that are not on your list or not labelled: 'the small greenhouse next to it is for staff only'. These are the map versions of the distractors you studied yesterday.

Finally, remember that the answers still come in order. If the speaker has finished describing the shop and moved on to the café, stop looking for the shop — choose the most likely letter and follow the new route.

আঙুল বা কলম দিয়ে বক্তার পথ অনুসরণ করুন। জায়গা সরে যাওয়া ('used to be… now') এবং label-বিহীন জায়গার বর্ণনা — এগুলো map-এর distractor।

Diagrams, plans and flow-charts Diagram, plan ও flow-chart

Not every labelling task is a map. You may see a floor plan of a building, a diagram of a machine such as a water filter or a solar cooker, or a flow-chart of a process. In a diagram the speaker usually describes the parts from top to bottom, from outside to inside, or in the order the thing works: 'Water enters at the top, passes through a layer of sand, and then…'.

The language changes slightly. Instead of left and right you hear above, below, on top of, underneath, inside, attached to, at the base of and in the centre. In a process you hear first, next, after that, once this is done and finally. The preparation is the same as for maps: find where the description is likely to start, read every printed label, and decide which way the speaker is probably moving.

Diagram answers are often written words, not letters, so the Day 5 rules apply: check the word limit, the spelling and whether a plural is needed. A label such as 'metal ______' after a number like 'two' must be plural.

Diagram বা flow-chart-এ বক্তা সাধারণত উপর থেকে নিচে বা কাজের ক্রমে বর্ণনা করেন। above, below, inside, attached to, first, next — এই শব্দগুলো শুনুন। উত্তর লিখিত শব্দ হলে word limit, বানান ও plural দেখুন।

Map answers are often a single letter. On the paper test, write the letter clearly (a capital B, not a small b that looks like a 6). On the computer test, double-check you clicked the letter you meant.

Map-এর উত্তর সাধারণত একটি অক্ষর — পরিষ্কার করে capital letter-এ লিখুন।

✍️ Worked example: Following a route on a museum plan

Plan of the ground floor: you enter through the Main Entrance in the middle of the south wall. A corridor runs north from the entrance. Room A is the first door on the west side of the corridor; Room B is opposite it on the east side; Room C is at the far (north) end of the corridor; Room D is in the north-east corner, reached through Room B.
Where is the Children's Gallery?
Recording: 'As you come in, the room on your right used to be the Children's Gallery, but it's now our temporary exhibition space. The Children's Gallery has moved to the end of the corridor, straight ahead of you, so families can find it easily.'
  1. Start point: put your pen on the Main Entrance. You are walking north, so your right is the east side of the page.
  2. 'The room on your right' = the east side, first door = Room B. But listen to the verb: it used to be the Children's Gallery. Cross B.
  3. 'Has moved to the end of the corridor, straight ahead' = the far north end = Room C.
  4. Room D (north-east corner) is close to C and is a typical wrong guess for candidates who hear 'end' and look at the corners.
  5. Answer: C. The time words 'used to be' and 'now' were the key, not the room description alone.

🎯 Listening practice: a tour of a botanic garden

THE PLAN (read it carefully first): Greenhill Botanic Garden is a rectangle with north at the top. The Main Gate is in the middle of the south wall. A straight central path runs north from the gate to a round pond in the middle of the garden, and continues to the north wall. Five buildings are labelled: A is just inside the gate, on the west side of the path. B is on the east side of the pond. C is in the north-west corner. D is at the far north end of the central path. E is in the south-east corner. The car park is outside the east wall, next to E. Questions 1–4: which letter marks each place? Questions 5–6: choose the correct answer. Play the recording ONCE.

আগে plan-এর বর্ণনা পড়ে কাগজে একটি ছোট map এঁকে নিন — উপরে north, নিচের দেয়ালের মাঝখানে Main Gate। তারপর recording একবার শুনে প্রতিটি জায়গার অক্ষর বেছে নিন।

Show the transcript (after you answer)

Narrator: You will hear a guide talking to a group of new volunteers at Greenhill Botanic Garden. First, you have some time to look at the plan and questions one to six.

Woman: Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Greenhill. Before your first shift, I'll take you round the plan so you know where everything is. We're standing at the Main Gate, in the middle of the south wall, and the wide path in front of us leads straight up to the pond in the centre of the garden.

Woman: Just inside the gate, on your left as you walk in, is the shop. That's where you'll collect your volunteer badge every morning, so it's the first place you'll go.

Woman: Now, some of you may remember the café in the south-east corner, beside the car park. That building is now our education centre. The café moved last spring, and you'll find it on the east side of the pond, with tables looking out across the water.

Woman: Next, the tool store. Walk up the central path, and when you reach the pond, turn left and keep going until you can't go any further. That's the north-west corner, and that's where you'll pick up gloves, spades and so on.

Woman: If, instead of turning, you carry straight on past the pond, the path ends at the big glasshouse, at the far end of the garden. That's where our tropical plants are. Please don't confuse it with the small greenhouse in the north-east corner — that one's for staff only, and it isn't marked on your plan.

Woman: On Saturdays some of you will help lead the family tour. We always walk round the pond clockwise, starting from the café, so that the sun is behind the visitors when they take photos. Some guides used to go the other way, but we've stopped that.

Woman: Finally, safety. If the fire alarm sounds, the meeting point is not the car park, as many people assume. It's the lawn directly opposite the shop — so on your right as you come in through the gate. Right, any questions before we start?

  1. 1. 1. Which letter marks the shop?

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Reading 'on your left' as the left of the page when the speaker is walking in a different direction.
  • Choosing the old position of a place that has moved ('used to be in the south-east corner').
  • Labelling a feature that is described but not on the list, such as a staff-only greenhouse.
  • Not finding the starting point in the reading time, then being lost from the first sentence.
  • Confusing 'next to' (same side) with 'opposite' (other side of the path).

📖 Lesson

The most common question type — and the easiest marks to lose সবচেয়ে বেশি আসা প্রশ্ন — আর সবচেয়ে সহজে নম্বর হারানো

Form, note, table, flow-chart, summary and sentence completion all work the same way: you write words you hear into a gap. Together they make up a large share of the 40 questions, and almost all of Part 1. They are not usually difficult to hear. They are difficult to write correctly under time pressure.

An answer is marked wrong if it is misspelled, if it breaks the word limit, if it has the wrong number (singular instead of plural), or if it does not fit the gap. Nobody gives half marks for 'nearly right'. A candidate who hears all ten answers in Part 1 can still score six out of ten. Four lost marks like that can be the difference between Band 6.5 and Band 7.0 across a whole test (26 versus 30 correct).

So today's lesson is less about listening and more about accuracy: the rules the examiners use, and the habits that protect your marks.

Completion প্রশ্নে উত্তর শোনা সাধারণত কঠিন নয় — কঠিন হলো সঠিকভাবে লেখা। বানান ভুল, word limit ভাঙা, singular/plural ভুল — যেকোনো একটিতেই পুরো নম্বর যায়।

Word limits: read them, circle them, obey them Word limit: পড়ুন, চিহ্নিত করুন, মেনে চলুন

Every completion task begins with an instruction such as ONE WORD ONLY, ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER, or NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER. If your answer is longer than the limit, it is wrong — even if it contains the right word. The rules for counting are simple once you learn them:

  • A hyphenated word counts as one word: 'part-time', 'well-known', 'twenty-three'.
  • A number written in digits counts as a number, not a word: '23', '7.45', '£385'. So with ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER, 'Tuesday 14' is allowed.
  • ONE WORD ONLY means no number can be added. 'Tuesday' is fine; 'Tuesday 14' is not.
  • Do not repeat words already printed next to the gap. If the form says '14 ______ Road', write only 'Larkfield', not '14 Larkfield Road'.
  • When a number could be written in words or digits, choose digits. 'Twenty-three' and '23' are both correct, but digits are faster and avoid spelling mistakes.

Hyphen দেওয়া শব্দ এক শব্দ। অঙ্কে লেখা সংখ্যা 'number' হিসেবে গণ্য। ONE WORD ONLY হলে সংখ্যা যোগ করা যাবে না। Gap-এর পাশে ছাপা শব্দ আবার লিখবেন না। সংখ্যা সবসময় অঙ্কে লিখুন।

Is this answer within the limit?

NO MORE THAN TWO WORDSpart-time jobYes — 'part-time' is one word
NO MORE THAN TWO WORDSthe main hallNo — three words; write 'main hall'
NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER18 MayYes — one word and a number

Numbers, dates, times and money সংখ্যা, তারিখ, সময় ও টাকা

Numbers are where Part 1 marks quietly disappear. First, learn how numbers sound. In phone numbers and codes, 'oh' means 0, 'double four' means 44 and 'triple two' means 222. Thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, fifteen and fifty differ mainly in stress: thir-TEEN stresses the end, THIR-ty stresses the beginning. If you are unsure, listen for what comes next — a speaker who says 'thirty… that's three-oh' is helping you.

Dates can be written several ways, and all common forms are accepted: '18 May', '18th May', 'May 18', 'May 18th'. Avoid all-number dates such as 18/5, because they can be read differently in different countries. Times: '7.45', '7:45' and '7.45 am' are all fine. Do not write both a time in digits and 'in the morning' if that breaks the word limit.

Money: if the currency symbol is already printed (£ ______), write only the number. If it is not, include the symbol or the word: '£385' or '385 pounds'. Listen to the end of the sentence before writing a price — speakers often add an extra charge or a discount, and the total is what the question wants.

'oh' = 0, 'double four' = 44। thirteen/thirty-র পার্থক্য stress-এ। তারিখ '18 May' বা 'May 18' — দুটোই চলবে, তবে 18/5 লিখবেন না। £ ছাপা থাকলে শুধু সংখ্যা লিখুন, আর দাম লেখার আগে বাক্য শেষ পর্যন্ত শুনুন।

Spelling, plurals and grammar fit বানান, plural আর grammar মেলানো

When a name or a code is spelled, write the letters as you hear them — do not try to remember the whole word first. Learn the letters that Bangladeshi learners most often confuse in English: A (ay) and E (ee), E and I (eye), G (jee) and J (jay), and W (double-you). Practise by spelling your own name and address aloud every day this week.

Common words that are not spelled out must still be spelled correctly: accommodation, necessary, library, Wednesday, February, receipt, environment. British or American spelling are both accepted (colour or color), but a spelling that is neither is wrong.

Plurals are the other silent killer. If the speaker says 'space for four bicycles', the answer is 'bicycles', not 'bicycle'. Look at the words around the gap: a number before it ('two ______'), no article ('bring comfortable ______'), or a plural verb after it ('______ are provided') all point to a plural. Finally, read the full sentence with your answer in it. If it does not sound like correct English, something is wrong.

Spell করা নাম অক্ষর ধরে ধরে লিখুন। A/E, E/I, G/J অক্ষরগুলো আলাদা করে চিনুন। British বা American — দুই বানানই চলে। Gap-এর আগে সংখ্যা থাকলে উত্তর plural হবে। শেষে পুরো বাক্যটি পড়ে দেখুন ঠিক শোনাচ্ছে কি না।

Tables, flow-charts and summaries Table, flow-chart ও summary

The same rules apply to every completion format, but each layout has its own small trick. A table is read row by row, usually left to right, so the answers move across before they move down. Look at the column headings — Name, Cost, Location, Comments — because they tell you the type of answer in every gap of that column. If one cell in the 'Cost' column says '£12', the gap below it is also a price.

A flow-chart shows the stages of a process with arrows. The speaker describes the stages in order, so the arrows are your route. Gaps in a flow-chart are often verbs or nouns for actions: 'The samples are ______' or 'Collect the ______'. Predict the grammar carefully, because a verb in the wrong form (dry instead of dried) can be marked wrong.

A summary or sentence completion gives you continuous sentences with gaps. These look harder, but they give you the most grammar clues. Read each sentence aloud in your head with a blank in it, and decide exactly which word class is missing before the recording starts.

Table সাধারণত সারি ধরে বাম থেকে ডানে পড়া হয় — column heading দেখে উত্তরের ধরন বুঝুন। Flow-chart-এ তীরচিহ্ন ধরে এগোন; verb-এর সঠিক রূপ দিন। Summary-তে grammar clue সবচেয়ে বেশি থাকে।

On the paper test you may write answers in capital letters, which removes many handwriting problems. On the computer test, type carefully: the computer does not correct spelling for you.

Paper test-এ capital letter-এ লিখলে হাতের লেখার সমস্যা কমে। Computer test-এ বানান নিজেকেই ঠিক রাখতে হবে।

✍️ Worked example: Checking five answers against the rules

Instruction: Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.
A candidate wrote these answers. Which ones lose marks?
1. Course starts: on Monday 3 June
2. Fee: £ £120
3. Bring two ______ (passport photo)
4. Teacher's name: Ms Gomez (spelled G-O-M-E-S)
5. Room: Room 12B
  1. Answer 1 is wrong: 'on Monday 3 June' is three words plus a number. 'Monday 3 June' would be accepted (two words and a number).
  2. Answer 2 should be '120': the £ sign is already printed, so do not write it again.
  3. Answer 3 is wrong: 'two' before the gap demands a plural — 'passport photos' (or 'photographs').
  4. Answer 4 is wrong: the speaker spelled G-O-M-E-S, so 'Gomez' is a different name. Write exactly the letters you hear.
  5. Answer 5 is risky: if 'Room' is printed before the gap, write only '12B'. Repeating printed words can break the word limit.

Narrator: You will hear a woman phoning a coach company to book a minibus for a student trip. First, you have some time to look at questions one to eight.

Man: Good morning, Northway Coaches, Ben speaking. How can I help?

Woman: Hello. I'd like to book a minibus for a day trip. I'm organising it for my university's photography society.

Man: Certainly. Can I take your name first?

Woman: Tahmina Chowdhury. The surname is C, H, O, W, D, H, U, R, Y.

Man: Thank you. And how many passengers will there be?

Woman: We had twenty-five names on the list, but two people have dropped out, so twenty-three, including me.

Man: Twenty-three — that's fine. Our large minibus seats twenty-four. And which date did you have in mind?

Woman: Saturday the eighteenth of May.

Man: The eighteenth… yes, we have a vehicle free that day.

Man: Where should the driver collect you?

Woman: From the student union. It's fourteen Larkfield Road. That's L, A, R, K, F, I, E, L, D.

Man: Got it. And what time would you like to leave?

Woman: We'd said quarter past seven, but the union building doesn't open until half past, so let's make it seven forty-five.

Man: Seven forty-five in the morning. Will you be carrying anything unusual?

Woman: Yes, actually. A few people want to cycle along the coast in the afternoon, so we'll need space for four bicycles.

Man: No problem, we can fit a rack on the back. Now, the price. The day rate for the large minibus is three hundred and fifty pounds, and the bike rack is an extra thirty-five, so that's three hundred and eighty-five pounds altogether.

Woman: Is fuel included in that?

Man: Yes, fuel and the driver are both included. You'd only need to pay for parking on the day.

Man: I'll email you a confirmation. Your booking reference is M, B, four, seven, oh, nine.

Woman: M, B, four, seven, zero, nine. Thanks very much.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Repeating words that are already printed next to the gap and going over the word limit.
  • Writing the singular form when a number or plural verb shows the answer must be plural.

  • Writing the letter O instead of the digit 0 in a code, or mixing up A/E and G/J when a name is spelled.
  • Writing dates only in numbers (18/5), which can be ambiguous, instead of '18 May'.

📖 Lesson

Why Parts 3 and 4 feel so different Part 3 ও Part 4 কেন আলাদা লাগে

Parts 1 and 2 are about everyday life, and most answers are concrete: names, prices, places. In Parts 3 and 4 the context becomes academic. Part 3 is a discussion about study — a project, an assignment, a piece of research — with two to four speakers. Part 4 is a lecture given by one speaker, with no break in the middle, and usually about ten questions in a row.

The vocabulary is harder, but that is not the main problem for most candidates. The real problems are length and concentration. A Part 4 lecture lasts several minutes without a pause. If you lose your place once, you can easily lose three or four answers before you find it again. So the skills today are about structure: knowing where the speaker is in their talk, and knowing how to get back in when you get lost.

Remember the score table from Day 1. Band 7 needs 30 out of 40. Many Band 7 candidates still lose four or five marks in Part 4. You do not need to understand every sentence of the lecture; you need to keep up with the notes.

Part 3 পড়াশোনা নিয়ে আলোচনা, Part 4 একজনের lecture — মাঝে কোনো বিরতি নেই। মূল সমস্যা কঠিন শব্দ নয়, বরং দৈর্ঘ্য ও মনোযোগ ধরে রাখা। প্রতিটি বাক্য বোঝার দরকার নেই — notes-এর সাথে তাল রাখুন।

The notes are a map of the lecture Notes হলো lecture-এর map

Part 4 questions are usually note completion: a page of notes with headings, bullet points and gaps. The person who wrote those notes listened to the lecture and summarised it in order. That means the notes show you the structure of the talk before you hear it.

In the reading time, do not just read the gaps. Read the headings first. If the headings are 'How mangroves survive', 'Coastal protection', 'Carbon', 'Threats', you already know the lecture has four sections, and you know the order. When the lecturer starts talking about storms, you know you are in the second section, even if you missed everything before it.

Then predict each gap as you learned on Day 2: grammar first, then meaning. In a lecture the answers are often nouns for processes, materials, places or groups of people, and often only ONE WORD ONLY is allowed. Underline the words next to each gap; the lecturer will say something very close to them just before or after the answer.

Part 4-এর notes lecture-এর ক্রম অনুযায়ী লেখা। আগে heading-গুলো পড়ুন — এগুলো দেখায় lecture কয়টি অংশে ভাগ এবং কোন ক্রমে। তারপর প্রতিটি gap-এর grammar ও meaning অনুমান করুন।

Signposting language: the lecturer's road signs

What the lecturer is doingWhat you hear
Introducing the structureI'll cover three things today… / I'll start by… and then move on to…
Starting the first pointFirstly… / To begin with… / Let's start with…
Moving to a new sectionTurning to… / Moving on to… / Now let's consider… / So what about…?
Marking something importantA key point is… / What's crucial here is… / It's worth stressing that…
Correcting a common beliefPeople often assume… In fact… / Contrary to popular belief…
Adding to the same pointThe roots do something else too… / What's more… / On top of that…
ConcludingTo sum up… / In conclusion… / So, overall…

Using signposts to stay on track Signpost দিয়ে সঠিক জায়গায় থাকা

Signposting phrases are your best friends in Part 4. When you hear 'Turning to coastal protection', move your eyes to the heading 'Coastal protection' immediately — even if you have not answered the questions above it. The lecturer will not go back.

Two signposts deserve special attention. 'A key point' or 'what's crucial' very often comes just before an answer, because the question writer chose the most important information for the notes. And 'People often assume… In fact…' is a built-in distractor: the first idea (what people assume) is wrong, and the answer comes after 'in fact'. It is the lecture version of the corrections you met in Part 1.

Part 3 has signposts too, but they are shorter and shared between speakers: 'Shall we move on to the methodology?', 'What about the results section?', 'OK, that's the introduction sorted.' Listen for them in the same way — they tell you which group of questions you are in.

'Turning to…' শুনলেই notes-এর পরের heading-এ চোখ নিন। 'A key point' প্রায়ই উত্তরের ঠিক আগে আসে। 'People assume… In fact…' — প্রথম ধারণাটি ভুল, উত্তর আসে 'in fact'-এর পরে।

When you get lost — and you will হারিয়ে গেলে কী করবেন

Every candidate loses the thread sometimes. What matters is how fast you recover. Use this simple rescue plan:

  • Do not go back. The question you missed is gone. Make a quick guess later, in the checking time.
  • Look ahead two gaps. Read the words around the next two gaps, not just the next one. One of them will match what you hear soon.
  • Wait for a signpost or a heading word. As soon as the lecturer names a section ('So what's destroying them?'), you know exactly where you are.
  • Keep writing short. In Part 4 you have no time to write long notes. Write the answer, or the first few letters, and correct the spelling in the checking time.
  • Practise under real conditions. At home, play a full Part 4 once, without pausing, and do not read the transcript until you have finished. Pausing the audio trains a habit you cannot use in the exam.

হারিয়ে গেলে পেছনে যাবেন না। পরের দুটি gap দেখুন, signpost-এর জন্য অপেক্ষা করুন, সংক্ষেপে লিখুন। বাড়িতে অনুশীলনের সময় audio থামাবেন না — পরীক্ষার মতো একবারেই শুনুন।

Part 3 under exam conditions পরীক্ষার পরিবেশে Part 3

Part 3 combines the challenges of Days 3 and 6. There are several voices, so you must know who is speaking. Use the reading time to note the names in the questions and, if possible, picture each speaker: the tutor usually sounds more formal and asks questions, while the students explain and disagree. When the recording starts, the speakers introduce themselves or call each other by name in the first few lines — listen for that and connect each voice to a name.

Part 3 question sets often change type halfway: four multiple-choice questions, then a matching task, then a short completion task. Before the recording begins, draw a line between the groups and read the new instruction for each group. Many candidates lose marks at the change, because they are still answering in the style of the previous group.

Finally, protect your stamina. Parts 3 and 4 come at the end of the test, when concentration is lowest. In your practice at home, take Parts 3 and 4 back-to-back without a break at least once a week, so that the real test does not feel longer than your training.

Part 3-এ কে কথা বলছে তা বুঝুন — tutor সাধারণত বেশি formal। প্রশ্নের ধরন মাঝপথে বদলায়, তাই প্রতিটি group-এর নির্দেশনা আলাদা করে পড়ুন। বাড়িতে সপ্তাহে অন্তত একবার Part 3 ও 4 একটানা অনুশীলন করুন।

Part 4 answers are usually words the lecturer actually says, not paraphrases. The paraphrase is in the notes around the gap. So when the context matches, write the lecturer's exact word and check its spelling and the word limit.

Part 4-এর উত্তর সাধারণত lecturer-এর বলা শব্দই — paraphrase থাকে gap-এর চারপাশের notes-এ।

✍️ Worked example: Finding an answer after 'In fact'

Notes: Bees and memory
• Bees remember flower locations using mainly ______ (ONE WORD ONLY)
Recording: 'It's often assumed that bees find their way back to good flowers by smell. And scent does play a part close up. But a key point from recent experiments is that, in fact, bees rely mainly on landmarks — trees, buildings, even the shape of a hedge — to remember where flowers are.'
  1. Predict: after 'using mainly' — a plural noun or an uncountable noun for a type of information: sight, colour, smell, landmarks.
  2. Hear the signal 'often assumed': the first idea, smell, is what people believe. Expect it to be corrected.
  3. 'Scent does play a part close up' is a second trap: it is partly true, but not the main method. The notes say 'mainly'.
  4. 'A key point… in fact… rely mainly on landmarks': two signposts together, and 'rely mainly on' matches 'using mainly'. Answer: landmarks.
  5. Check: one word, plural, correctly spelled. 'Trees' and 'buildings' are examples of landmarks, not the general answer the notes need.

🎯 Listening practice: a lecture on mangrove forests

Complete the notes. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer. Read the four headings first: Survival, Coastal protection, Carbon and the economy, Threats and solutions. Then play the recording ONCE, without pausing, as in the real test.

Notes পূরণ করুন — প্রতিটি উত্তরে মাত্র এক শব্দ। আগে চারটি heading পড়ুন, তারপর আসল পরীক্ষার মতো না থামিয়ে একবার শুনুন।

Show the transcript (after you answer)

Narrator: You will hear part of a lecture about mangrove forests. First, you have some time to look at questions one to eight.

Lecturer: Good morning. Today we're looking at mangrove forests — the trees that grow along tropical coastlines, in the zone where rivers meet the sea. I'll cover how they survive, why they matter for coastal protection and the climate, and finally what's threatening them.

Lecturer: Firstly, survival. Mangroves live in salty water that would kill most trees. Different species deal with this in different ways. Some block much of the salt at their roots, while others take it in and then get rid of it through their leaves. On some species, you can actually see tiny salt crystals on the leaves.

Lecturer: Turning to coastal protection. When a storm pushes waves towards the shore, the dense roots of a mangrove forest act rather like a brake. They take energy out of the water, so the waves that reach the villages behind the forest are much smaller.

Lecturer: The roots do something else too. They slow the water down so much that sediment — the fine material carried down by rivers — settles and stays there. Over time, this allows the coastline to build up rather than wash away.

Lecturer: Now, a key point that is often misunderstood concerns carbon. People assume the carbon is mainly in the trees themselves. In fact, most of it is stored in the soil beneath them, where waterlogged conditions mean that dead plant material breaks down very slowly.

Lecturer: Mangroves matter economically as well. Many fish and crab species spend their early lives among the roots, which work as nurseries, safe from larger predators. So a healthy forest supports fishing families well beyond its edge.

Lecturer: So what's destroying them? Cutting trees for firewood plays a part, and so does building along the coast. But in many parts of South and South-East Asia, one of the biggest causes of loss in recent decades has been shrimp farming, with ponds dug where forests once stood.

Lecturer: Fortunately, replanting can work. But the evidence suggests it succeeds mainly where local communities are involved from the start. Projects that simply plant seedlings and leave often find that most of them die within a few years.

Lecturer: To sum up, mangroves protect coasts, store carbon and support livelihoods. And in many places, restoring them costs far less than building and maintaining concrete embankments. Here in Bangladesh, the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, shows what is at stake. Next week, we'll look at that forest in detail.

  1. 1. Survival: some species remove salt through their ______.

  2. 2. Coastal protection: dense ______ reduce the energy of waves.

  3. 3. They also trap ______, which helps the coastline build up.

  4. 4. Carbon and the economy: most carbon is stored in the ______, not the trees.

  5. 5. Young fish and crabs use the roots as ______.

  6. 6. Threats and solutions: a major cause of loss in Asia is ______ farming.

  7. 7. Replanting works best when local ______ take part from the beginning.

  8. 8. Restoring mangroves is often cheaper than building concrete ______.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Reading only the gaps and ignoring the headings, so you do not know which section the lecturer is in.
  • Staying stuck on a missed question while the lecturer moves on to the next section.
  • Writing the belief that comes after 'people assume' instead of the fact that comes after 'in fact'.
  • Writing an example ('trees', 'crabs') when the notes need the general word the lecturer uses.
  • Practising Part 4 at home with pauses and repeats, which does not build the stamina you need.

Review and self-diagnosis

পুনরালোচনা ও নিজের দুর্বলতা খুঁজে বের করা

By the end of today you can

  • Recall the key habit for each Listening question type from this week
  • Sort every wrong answer into a clear cause, such as distractor, spelling or lost place
  • Start a personal error log and use it to choose what to practise
  • Plan a short daily Listening routine to continue during Week 2

📖 Lesson

Why review matters more than another test আরেকটি test-এর চেয়ে review কেন বেশি জরুরি

Many students prepare for IELTS Listening by taking test after test. They check the score, feel happy or unhappy, and start the next one. Their score often stays the same for months, because they keep making the same mistakes without noticing them.

A score tells you how many answers were wrong. It does not tell you why. The why is what you can fix. One student loses marks because she writes the first number she hears; another because he misspells common words; a third because she gets lost in Part 4. They all score 24, but they need completely different practice.

Today you will review the week, do a short mixed task, and then learn a simple method for diagnosing your own mistakes. From now on, every practice test you take on this site should end with ten minutes of this diagnosis. It is the cheapest way to gain marks.

শুধু test দিলে score একই থাকে, কারণ একই ভুল বারবার হয়। Score বলে কতগুলো ভুল, কিন্তু কেন ভুল তা বলে না — আর 'কেন' খুঁজে বের করলেই উন্নতি হয়।

This week in one table

DayQuestion type or skillThe habit to keep
1Test formatNever leave a blank; answers come in order
2Prediction and keywordsPredict grammar and meaning; listen for ideas, not words
3Multiple choice and matchingShorten options; wait until the speakers decide
4Maps and plansFind the start point; follow the route with your finger
5Form, note, table completionObey the word limit; check spelling, plurals and numbers
6Parts 3 and 4Use headings and signposts; never go back

The six reasons answers go wrong উত্তর ভুল হওয়ার ছয়টি কারণ

After you mark a test, open the transcript and find the exact sentence that contains each answer you got wrong. Then decide which of these six causes explains it. Be honest — the point is to find a pattern, not to feel better.

  • Not heard: you did not catch the words at all — the speaker was fast, the accent was unfamiliar, or you did not know the word.
  • Paraphrase missed: you heard the answer but did not realise it matched the question, because the words were different.
  • Distractor: you chose an option that was mentioned but rejected, corrected, or true for someone else.
  • Lost place: you were still waiting for an earlier answer when this one went past.
  • Form error: you heard and understood it, but wrote it wrongly — spelling, plural, word limit, or the wrong number format.
  • Prediction error: you wrote a word of the wrong type (an adjective where a noun was needed) because you did not check the grammar of the gap.

প্রতিটি ভুল উত্তর transcript-এ খুঁজে ছয়টি কারণের একটিতে ফেলুন: শুনতে পাইনি, paraphrase ধরতে পারিনি, distractor-এ পড়েছি, জায়গা হারিয়েছি, লেখায় ভুল (বানান, plural, word limit), বা gap-এর grammar মেলাইনি।

Building your personal error log নিজের error log তৈরি করা

An error log is a simple table in a notebook or a phone note. Every time you get an answer wrong, add one line. It takes about thirty seconds per mistake, and after two or three tests the log will show you clearly where your marks are going.

For each wrong answer, write: the test and question number, the part, the question type, what you wrote, the correct answer, the cause from the six above, and one action for next time. Keep the action short and specific: not 'listen better', but 'when I hear a price, wait for the end of the sentence'.

At the end of each week, count your causes. If half your mistakes are form errors, your next week's practice should be dictation of numbers, dates and spellings, not harder lectures. If most are distractors, practise Part 3 multiple choice and say aloud why each wrong option is wrong. If you keep losing your place, practise full parts without pausing. Let the log decide your practice, not your mood.

প্রতিটি ভুলের জন্য এক লাইন লিখুন: test, প্রশ্ন নম্বর, part, প্রশ্নের ধরন, আপনার উত্তর, সঠিক উত্তর, কারণ, আর পরের বার কী করবেন। সপ্তাহ শেষে কারণগুলো গুনে দেখুন — সেটাই ঠিক করবে কী অনুশীলন করবেন।

Before Week 2: keep Listening alive Week 2-এর আগে: Listening চর্চা চালু রাখুন

Next week moves on to Reading, but your Listening will fade quickly if you stop. Keep a small daily routine of fifteen to twenty minutes alongside the Reading lessons.

  • Every day: five minutes of number and spelling dictation — play any English podcast and write every number, date and name you hear.
  • Every day: ten minutes of active listening with a task set before you press play, then a check with the transcript.
  • Twice in the week: one full practice part on this site, followed by ten minutes of error-log diagnosis.
  • At the weekend: count the causes in your log and choose next week's focus.

Week 2-এ Reading শুরু হলেও প্রতিদিন ১৫–২০ মিনিট Listening চালিয়ে যান: সংখ্যা ও বানানের dictation, task নিয়ে শোনা, সপ্তাহে দুটি practice part, আর error log বিশ্লেষণ।

Using the checking time well শেষের checking time কাজে লাগানো

Your error log will probably show some mistakes that a final check could have caught. On the computer-delivered test you have two minutes at the end; on the paper test you have ten minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. Use that time in a fixed order.

First, fill every blank with your best guess, because there is no negative marking. Second, check form: spelling of common words, plurals after numbers, and the word limit for each group of questions. Third, check numbers: did you write 15 when the context suggests 50? Does a price or a date make sense in real life? Do not spend the checking time trying to remember a recording you did not hear — that time is better spent protecting answers you did hear.

On paper, transfer carefully: one wrong line on the answer sheet can move every later answer into the wrong box. Check the question number every five answers.

শেষের সময়ে আগে সব ফাঁকা পূরণ করুন, তারপর বানান, plural ও word limit দেখুন, শেষে সংখ্যাগুলো যুক্তিসঙ্গত কি না দেখুন। Paper test-এ প্রতি পাঁচটি উত্তরে প্রশ্ন নম্বর মিলিয়ে নিন।

Do not judge your progress by one test score. Scores on single parts go up and down by two or three marks for no clear reason. Judge it by your error log: are the same causes appearing less often?

একটি test-এর score দিয়ে উন্নতি বিচার করবেন না — error log-এ একই কারণ কম আসছে কি না, সেটা দেখুন।

✍️ Worked example: Diagnosing three wrong answers

A student's answers from a Part 1 test, with the transcript lines:
1. Question: 'Course starts on ______' (ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER). Wrote: 'Monday'. Transcript: 'It was going to be Monday, but we've moved it to Wednesday.'
2. Question: 'Parking costs £ ______ per day'. Wrote: '15'. Transcript: 'It's fifty pounds a week, or nine pounds a day.'
3. Question: 'Bring a ______'. Wrote: 'dictionnary'. Transcript: 'You'll need a dictionary.'
  1. Answer 1 — Distractor. The first day was corrected ('we've moved it to'). Action: when I hear 'was going to be', wait for the change.
  2. Answer 2 — Not heard plus prediction. The student confused 'fifty' and 'fifteen', and also missed that £50 was the weekly price. The keyword 'per day' pointed to the second price: 9. Action: link the price to the keyword (day/week), not to the first number.
  3. Answer 3 — Form error. The student heard and understood the word but misspelled it (dictionary has one n). Action: add 'dictionary' to a personal spelling list and test it weekly.
  4. Pattern: two of three mistakes were not about hearing. More listening alone would not fix them; checking corrections and spelling would.
  5. Log it: each line goes into the error log with its cause and action, so it can be counted at the end of the week.

🎯 Listening practice: mixed review — a radio interview

This short recording tests several of this week's skills: completion, multiple choice and a map description. For questions 1, 3, 4 and 6 write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER. Map information: the park entrance is on the south side, and north is at the top. Play the recording ONCE. Afterwards, write every wrong answer into your error log with its cause.

এই recording-এ সপ্তাহের কয়েকটি দক্ষতা একসাথে আছে। একবার শুনে উত্তর দিন, তারপর প্রতিটি ভুল উত্তর কারণসহ error log-এ লিখুন।

Show the transcript (after you answer)

Narrator: You will hear a local radio presenter interviewing the organiser of a book festival. First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.

Man: This morning I'm joined by Leila Ahmed, who's organising this year's Riverton Book Festival. Leila, when does it all begin?

Woman: We'd planned to open on Friday the seventh of June, but we've added an extra day, so we now start on Thursday the sixth and run until Sunday.

Man: And it's not at the town hall this year?

Woman: No. A lot of people think we moved because of the cost, but the council has always let us use the hall for free. The real reason is that the roof is being repaired all summer, so we're in Castle Park instead.

Man: How will people find their way around the park?

Woman: Well, as you come in through the main gate on the south side, the big tent for author talks is straight ahead of you. The bookshop tent is just to the right of it. And the children's tent is tucked away in the north-west corner, near the playground, so it's nice and quiet.

Man: And what about tickets?

Woman: Adults pay six pounds a session. Students and anyone under eighteen pay four pounds, and children under five come in free.

Man: Is there one event you'd particularly recommend?

Woman: Oh, that's hard. The poetry evening on Friday is always popular, and the crime writers' panel sold out last year. But if I had to choose just one, it would be the Saturday workshop on writing your family history. People leave with something they can actually use.

Man: Anything else listeners should know?

Woman: Yes. We're trying to cut down on plastic this year, so we're asking everyone to bring their own cups for tea and coffee. Water bottles we'll provide.

  1. 1. 1. The festival now starts on Thursday ______.

  2. 2. 2. Why is the festival not at the town hall this year?

  3. 3. 3. The children's tent is in the ______ corner of the park.

  4. 4. 4. Ticket price for students: £ ______ per session.

  5. 5. 5. Which event does Leila recommend most?

  6. 6. 6. Visitors are asked to bring their own ______.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Taking one practice test after another without finding out why answers were wrong.
  • Writing vague actions in an error log ('listen more carefully') instead of specific ones.
  • Blaming every wrong answer on 'not hearing' when many are really spelling, plurals or distractors.
  • Judging progress by a single score instead of by whether the same mistakes appear less often.
  • Stopping Listening practice completely while studying other skills.

🧩 Quiz · 12 questions

Answer every question, then read the explanation. Aim for 10 or more before you tick the day.
