Examiners see essays where almost every sentence begins with moreover, furthermore or in addition, and that pattern is described in the band descriptors as mechanical — it holds a score down rather than lifting it.

The second is shorter and more natural.

Paragraphing is part of this criterion too. Each paragraph should have a clear central topic, and a new paragraph should signal a new idea. A single long block of text, or a new paragraph for every sentence, both make an essay harder to follow.
