Matching Headings: A Method That Stops You Guessing

Matching Headings

Matching Headings punishes candidates who hunt for shared words. Here is a paragraph-first method that finds the main idea instead.

Matching Headings is the question type candidates most often call unfair, and it usually feels that way for one reason: they are matching words when the task is testing ideas. A heading and a paragraph can share three identical words and still be the wrong pair. The heading you want summarises what the whole paragraph is doing, not something it mentions on the way.

Start with the paragraphs, not the list of headings. Read a paragraph and, before you look at the options, say to yourself in five or six words what it is about. Is it describing a problem, explaining a cause, comparing two things, or giving a result? That short summary is your target. Only then read the headings and look for the one that says the same thing in different words.

The first and last sentences deserve extra attention, because writers often state their point there. But do not stop at them. A paragraph can open with background and deliver its real point halfway through, often after a word like however, yet or but. When you see one of those, the sentence that follows is frequently the main idea.

Be suspicious of any heading that repeats an unusual word from the paragraph. Test writers know candidates scan for matching vocabulary, and a shared word is one of the commonest traps. The correct heading usually paraphrases rather than copies.

There are always more headings than paragraphs, so some options are distractors that describe a detail inside one paragraph rather than the whole of it. If a heading fits only one sentence, it is almost certainly not the answer. Cross headings off as you use them, and remember that an example heading given in the instructions cannot be used again.

Finally, leave the hardest paragraph until last. Once the easier ones are matched, the remaining options are fewer and the decision becomes much simpler. Candidates who work through in strict order often spend four minutes on one paragraph and run short of time for the rest of the passage.
