Map Labelling: Stop Losing Marks on Directions

Map Labelling — দিক বোঝার ভুলে আর নম্বর হারাবেন না

Map questions are not hard because of vocabulary. They are hard because candidates lose their place on the plan. Orient yourself first and they become some of the easiest marks.

Map প্রশ্ন কঠিন হয় vocabulary-র জন্য নয়, বরং map-এ নিজের অবস্থান হারিয়ে ফেলার জন্য, তাই আগে দিক ঠিক করে নিন।

Map and plan labelling questions appear most often in Listening Part 2, where a speaker describes a place — a museum, a park, a new sports centre. Candidates frequently find these the most stressful questions in the paper, but the difficulty is rarely the language. It is losing your place on the map while the speaker keeps moving.

Map ও plan labelling প্রশ্ন সাধারণত Listening Part 2-এ আসে। এখানে মূল সমস্যা ভাষা নয়, বরং speaker এগিয়ে যাওয়ার সময় map-এ নিজের অবস্থান হারিয়ে ফেলা।

Use the time before the recording to orient yourself. Find where the speaker is likely to start: an entrance, a reception desk, a car park. Look for anything already labelled, and notice how the labelled features relate to each other. If there is a compass or the word North, note it.

Recording শুরুর আগে map দেখে নিন: speaker কোথা থেকে শুরু করতে পারেন (entrance, reception, car park), কোনগুলো আগে থেকেই label করা আছে, আর North বা compass চিহ্ন আছে কি না।

Learn the language of position and direction until it is automatic: opposite, next to, adjacent to, beside, beyond, at the far end, in the corner, just past, on your left as you enter, clockwise and anticlockwise. Many answers depend on a single one of these phrases, so a moment's hesitation can cost you the next question as well.

Opposite, next to, beside, beyond, at the far end, in the corner, just past, clockwise-এর মতো অবস্থান ও দিকের শব্দগুলো এমনভাবে শিখুন যাতে মুহূর্তেই বুঝতে পারেন।

Follow the speaker's route with your pencil. As they describe moving from one point to the next, trace the path on the map. This keeps you in the right place even when the speaker mentions several locations close together.

Speaker যে পথে এগোচ্ছেন, pencil দিয়ে map-এ সেই পথ অনুসরণ করুন। এতে কাছাকাছি অনেকগুলো জায়গার নাম এলেও সঠিক জায়গায় থাকতে পারবেন।

The answers come in order, just as in other Listening questions. If you miss one, do not keep searching for it — move your attention to the next item, or you will miss that one too. You can make a sensible guess afterwards.

উত্তরগুলো ক্রমানুসারে আসে। একটি মিস করলে সেটা খুঁজতে থাকবেন না, পরের প্রশ্নে মন দিন, পরে যুক্তিসংগত অনুমান করে নিন।

Watch for speakers correcting themselves. A guide might say the café is next to the gift shop and then add that it has recently moved to the upper floor. The corrected information is the answer, which is exactly why the test includes these changes.

Speaker নিজের কথা সংশোধন করলে খেয়াল রাখুন, যেমন café আগে gift shop-এর পাশে ছিল কিন্তু এখন উপরের তলায়। সংশোধিত তথ্যটিই সঠিক উত্তর।
