Lexical Resource is a quarter of your Writing and Speaking scores, and candidates often try to raise it by memorising long, unusual words. The Band 7 descriptor asks for something more specific: less common vocabulary used with awareness of style and collocation. A rare word used in the wrong combination tells the examiner you have learned the word without learning how it behaves.

A collocation is a combination of words that naturally go together. English speakers say 'make a decision' rather than 'do a decision', 'heavy rain' rather than 'strong rain', and 'pay attention' rather than 'give attention'. None of these is grammatically wrong, but the unnatural versions immediately sound like translation.

Many errors come from translating directly. It is worth keeping a list of the verbs that most often go wrong. We make a mistake, an effort, progress and a decision. We do research, homework and damage. We take measures, action, responsibility and a risk.

Learn collocations in phrases rather than as single words. When you meet a new word, write down the words it appears with in the sentence, not just its meaning. And use new collocations in your own sentences within a day or two, because recognising a phrase when you read it is very different from producing it under pressure.
