Five Pronunciation Habits Bangladeshi Candidates Can Fix

বাংলাভাষী পরীক্ষার্থীদের পাঁচটি সাধারণ উচ্চারণ সমস্যা ও সমাধান

Pronunciation is a quarter of your Speaking score. These patterns come from how Bangla sounds work, and each one has a simple practice drill.

Pronunciation হলো Speaking score-এর এক-চতুর্থাংশ, আর বাংলা উচ্চারণের প্রভাবে তৈরি সাধারণ ভুলগুলো সহজ drill দিয়েই ঠিক করা যায়।

Pronunciation is one of the four equally weighted criteria in the Speaking test, and it is not about sounding British or American. Examiners are judging how easily they can understand you. A clear, consistent accent of your own can score very well. What costs marks is a sound that changes the meaning of a word or makes the listener work hard to follow.

Pronunciation Speaking-এর চারটি সমান গুরুত্বের criterion-এর একটি, এবং এখানে British বা American শোনানো জরুরি নয়। Examiner দেখেন আপনাকে কত সহজে বোঝা যায়, নিজের স্পষ্ট accent-এও ভালো score সম্ভব।

The first pattern is the difference between v and w. Bangla does not separate these sounds the way English does, so 'vest' and 'west' or 'vine' and 'wine' can sound alike. For v, rest your top teeth lightly on your bottom lip and push air through. For w, round your lips without touching your teeth. Practise pairs slowly, then in sentences.

প্রথম সমস্যা v আর w-এর পার্থক্য, যেমন 'vest' ও 'west'। v-এর জন্য উপরের দাঁত নিচের ঠোঁটে হালকা রেখে বাতাস ছাড়ুন, w-এর জন্য দাঁত না ছুঁয়ে ঠোঁট গোল করুন।

The second is z. It is often replaced with a j sound, so 'zoo' can come out close to 'joo' and 'zero' close to 'jero'. The z sound is the buzzing version of s: hold an s, then switch on your voice without moving your tongue.

দ্বিতীয় সমস্যা z-কে j উচ্চারণ করা, যেমন 'zoo' হয়ে যায় 'joo'। z হলো s-এর গুঞ্জনময় রূপ: s ধরে রেখে জিভ না নড়িয়ে কণ্ঠস্বর চালু করুন।

The third is adding a vowel before words that start with s and another consonant. 'School' can become 'is-school' and 'station' 'is-station'. It happens because Bangla rarely begins a word with two consonants together. Practise by starting from the s sound itself — hold it for a moment, then continue straight into the rest of the word.

তৃতীয় সমস্যা s-যুক্ত শব্দের আগে স্বরধ্বনি যোগ করা, যেমন 'school' হয়ে যায় 'is-school'। সরাসরি s ধ্বনি দিয়ে শুরু করে একটু ধরে রেখে বাকি শব্দে চলে যান।

The fourth is word stress. English puts a stronger beat on one syllable of a word, and moving it can make a word hard to recognise: PHOtograph, phoTOgraphy, photoGRAPHic. When you learn a new word, learn where its stress falls at the same time, and mark it in your vocabulary notes.

চতুর্থ হলো word stress: PHOtograph, phoTOgraphy, photoGRAPHic-এর মতো শব্দে stress সরলে চেনা কঠিন হয়। নতুন শব্দ শেখার সময় stress কোথায় তা-ও নোটে লিখে রাখুন।

The fifth is sentence rhythm. English stresses content words — nouns, main verbs, adjectives — and reduces small grammar words like to, of and the. Giving every syllable equal weight makes speech sound flat and can hide your meaning. Listen to short recordings and repeat them, copying the rhythm as well as the words.

পঞ্চম হলো sentence rhythm: English-এ noun, main verb, adjective-এ জোর পড়ে আর to, of, the-এর মতো ছোট শব্দ হালকা হয়। ছোট recording শুনে rhythm সহ নকল করে অনুশীলন করুন।

Work on one pattern at a time rather than all five at once. Recording yourself on your phone and comparing it with a model is the quickest way to hear what an examiner hears.

একবারে পাঁচটি নয়, একটি করে সমস্যা নিয়ে কাজ করুন। ফোনে নিজের কথা record করে model-এর সাথে মিলিয়ে শোনাই সবচেয়ে দ্রুত উপায়।
